Jay, I'm going through the same thing with my Boston Bob Big Valve
Engine. Still using the OEM computer but have a EURO Digijet for use later
on after I get the engine broken in properly. I have my AFM spring at three
notches tighter tension now and yes it does affect the idle. If you loosen
the tension the idle will get smoother but the mixture richer. Bob has told
me that it's better to get the mixture leaned out and have a rough idle for
now. I'm using Ken Lewis's OXY sensor monitor to tell where the mixture is.
Make sure the idle control switches on the throttle body are working. This
is very important in getting the idle to stabilise. Right now I've got the
fuel mixture leaned out so that acceleration if great. Much, much better
than the stock set-up 2.1, however the idle is still rough. Bob says the
real power is above 4000 rpm but I would not know that since at only 850 km
on the engine I have not taken it past 4000 rpm yet. Coming soon ! The
sound of the engine revving is much freer and significantly better than the
stock engine that I drove for 380,000 km.
BTW, I have one maybe two of the EURO spec Digijet computers for sale
if anyone's interested. See my <A HREF="http://members.aol.com/Fkc43/sales.htm">Vanagon Items Forsale</A> webpage.
