JoeFo, Interesting enough I think that it is not pressure that is important for the working cap but negative pressure. It maybe that this smog test requirement is doing you a favor because the engine creates negative pressure in your gas tank by sucking vapors from the charcoal canister that is connected to the gas tank and that rather elaborate series of hoses and plastic tanks. In some models a bad cap can cause poor engine performance and even do damage to an engine and the cat. Seems reasonable that you would want to replace a bad cap. gary

They've been doing this for a couple of years. Your cap can be releasing gasoline vapors. Makes total sense to me. I brought an extra cap to my last inspection just in case. I haven't failed yet. However, I have seen cars with dirty rags for gas caps turned away.
