It is done by folks who think that by so doing they will see a performance gain.

Perhaps in a 1,200-lb Toyota one might vaguely notice a tiny increase, but in a vehicle like a Vanagon, the "open pipe" versus a new cat makes no perceptible difference in performance.

Some might judge this type of activity as anti-social, as it really is just secretly thumbing one's nose at the rest of the air breathers... make you wonder if the same person cheats the IRS and drives on the right hand shoulder in traffic jams...

I replaced the muffler on the Syncro last week and found out why the exhaust smells like a car twenty years older. What looked like a cat was just an empty can. Why is this done, and what effects does it have on tuning, performance, etc.? We don't have inspections in this part of Michigan so I'm not worried about that. I may put one in so my clean air conscience doesn't bother me though.
