Subject: Sludge in Fuel Filter
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

List,

The initial symptom to my problem was a "buzzing" fuel pump. This had gotten progressively louder but otherwise did not affect the operation of the van. Checking the archives, I found quite a few postings of fuel pump noise problems. One huge clue was the buzzing may be symptomatic of the real problem which is restriction in the gravity fuel delivery system. This was my case.

I changed the fuel filter last night. I shook the residual fuel from the inlet side of the old filter into a clear glass jar. What came out can only be described as mud or sludge. With the new fuel filter installed, the buzzing has disappeared. Something tells me it will be back. My question for the list is: has my 17-year old fuel tank started south? If so, do these Vanagon tanks respond to cleaning/ repainting or is a replacement tank necessary? I'm currently on a NOMAIL status. Please respond P-mail.
