on most vehicles it is relatively easy to convert from manual to auto
in relation to converting from auto to manual.  after looking at the
configurations of auto and manual vanagons it appears to be very
appropriate comparison in the vanagon as well.  the transmission shift
likage by itself is going to be a design feat.
