Take a penlight and peer into the slots before you tug on the knobs. In addition to needing to be pulled straight out by the shaft, they need to be offset a little up or down, depending on which knob. 2 need to go up and 2 down. The reason seems to be that the knob shaft (insertion joke here) is not on the same plane as the actual metal control lever. If you don't do this, the control lever "socket" on the inner end of the knob shaft hits the inside of the faceplate. -Simon
