I've used and abused Garmin units GPS II,III,III+ for years. They're tough and reliable.

The GPS V is not color. The Blaupunkt Navigation system is color. The Garmin Streetpilot in it's current version is color.

GPS V differs from the previous handhelds by it's autorouting capability. It will devine a route based on it's database from one waypoint or city to another. Garmin.com has details.

No single gps fits all needs. Some handle topographic information. Some have color and high battery drain. Some are pocketable. garmin.com also has a comparison tool to compare the various models.

GPS is invaluable for pinpointing locations and providing directions. GPS 5 has a passel of other "nifty" features. garmin.com

The garmin series is a fast initializing 12 channel system that retains lock quite well.
