Hayes Manual says 258 foot pounds. (80-83 Vanagon) I just ground mine off when I installed new rear axle stub bearings and nuts, then took the van to a truck stop to get them torqued. At 258 pounds you have to set the van in gear, with the emergency brakes on and then stand on the brake pedal. The mechanic had a very nice Snap On torque wrench about 36" long but he still had to bounce on the handle to get to 260 Ft. Pounds. He did a nice job for $10.00 and finally found a use for his $360.00 + Torque wrench. It was about a three minute job.
