The torque converter seals themselves rarely go bad. Leakage is often caused by a bad torque converter mounting bushing and/or an mount-alignment problem that can cause the worn bushing, or a ridge can be worn on the converter where the seal rides. This is one are I only get replacement seals from VW. Rebuilt Vanagon torque converters are not readily available due to the integral starter gear. A local transmission shop will have some one that can rebuild yours. Yes they get rebuilt. The are cut open, cleaned, internal parts replaced, (rotor, stator, turbine, one way clutch, etc), welded back together pressure tested and balanced.

Hi All:

The Anti-Christ (my 1990 Carat) blew her Torque Converter Seal (what a treat!) and I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen...and why it happens. Any input???
