In Michigan we got plenty of snow, at least when I was a kid (seems like less these dys), but it was too soft for metal-runnered sleds. The sled of choice was the plastic toboggon. That slick bottom really made 'em go. Of course, if you *did* get a crust of freezing rain the toboggons became unsteerable. Not that they were all that steerable to begin with...
