I've never had any leaking or mildew on the canvas or top in my Westy (8
years).
I always ventilate the top after driving in heavy rains or even if the
van was parked but in heavy rains.
It just stands to reason that condensation forms in various locationd
just as it does on your window glass.
A leak at your footwell  or anywhere else can cause mositure to collect
everywhere in the van.
Exposure to humidity on a long term basis will eventually lead to rot of
various forms.
