On my 82, its wired so that it will only run on 12v if the van is running (or maybe the ignition sw is in the on position). It would be a severe drain on your battery anyway, so I wouldnt try running it on 12v with the engine off. I have used 12v while driving and it works ok, alternator provides enough charge. Some complain that their fridge doesnt get cold enough on 12v. Mine is ok, just not as cold as gas or 120v. I have also used the propane setting while driving. I have heard complaints that the pilot will blow out, I didnt have this problem. Definitely use propane while camping, unless you have access to 120v.

I generally set mine to 120v and plug it in a few hours before I leave and put ice in the fridge. This will get it to a decent temp. Then use 12v while driving, then propane when I camp.

My tank is severely rusted aswell. The propane dealer noticed it, but didnt think it was a problem filling it. I plan on replacing it before next season.

good luck
