The 93-later Golf Jetta radios have the 6-CD changer control option which I have. is one won't lock up after four failed coding attempts. It works perfectly. The CD-changer boosts amp power , and the sound is rich, (I also have a 12 " sub and amp) The woofer is built into the top of the bin closest to the kitchen.
Where I live any nice high-end head set will be gone within a month or less. Apparently my local thieves think my radio stinks and means as much to them as the factory radio in a Ford means to most of us.
Mine is a Clarion which make quality electronics and the changer, harness, and CD-changer if bought new would easily cost over $600.00. Just the harness is $140.00 dealer price.
I still have this in my 82 camper and no one wants it because it looks like a cassette player, it needs a code, has a flashing red LED , it's unlikely that the thief will take down the VIN number, or come back for it, and the whole system cost me $150.00.
The kids around here park their cars right under their bedroom windows and have to ruin the lawn and yard appearance -the price to pay for having so much invested and no garage.

Hey gang,
While everyone was talking about that original radio and its silly code, it
made me remember something....
That radio stinks!
I mean, you could buy the crappiest no-name stereo head unit today, and it
would rock the pants off of that OEM dinosaur. I remember having the code
thing happen to me right after I bought my Vanagon, and I called the guy who
sold it to me, and asked him what the deal was. He said he could get me the
code, but seriously, to just get a new stereo.
I bought an Alpine with cassette (this was around 1995 I guess) and
installed an additional Alpine 30 watt amp under the drivers seat to power
the 6 x 9's that I cut into the rear bench board. The Alpine delivered, I
believe 8 watts at the head...
Today, the plain vanilla stereo heads deliver 30 watts, and there are units
with 50 watts for a decent price.
I have a 40 watt Kenwood in there now, with CD (funny, as this head unit has
more power than my Alpine amp under the seat!!) and I must say that I am
completely satisfied with the setup.
Unless you only want your sound system in the Vanagon so that you can listen
to Rush Limbaugh... do yourself a favor and upgrade!! That OEM radio is 15
years old! (it probably eats tapes too)
Anyway... good luck with your radio quest.
