Larry,

I'm an engineer in the wireless data dept. at Verizon in Harrisburg, PA. Lets chat, you shouldn't have to fight with Verizon, I will help you get a credit. Give me a call if you'd like. All of the carriers have these type of communication problems, the folks selling the data services really have a hard time getting the hang of data after selling voice for so long. I know we as a wireless company can be a PITA to deal with (actually all of the wireless companies can be a PITA), so let me help a fellow Vanagon List member out. Give me a shout.
