I agree with you and I would like to pass on how I deal with it, FWIW:
I love to read the emails on the list but it takes a different head
space.  So I have set up the rule wizard in outlook to route all list
mail to a separate folder (based on "vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com" in the
From line.  So now none of the list email get mixed with my other
pmails.  Then about once a day for relaxation I open the listserve
folder and read, if I let it go for a day or so it still won't
interfere, only the number of e-mail gets longer!
