Your solution really workd. I use the system as well. I run Netscape 7.0 and have my mail automatically sort into various mail folders. I subscribe to numerous newsgroups and mailing lists and would be overwhelmed if they came all mixed together. Some folders I will read several times a day as time permits, others I will read once a week. It's a good way to go.
