Hey gang,

While everyone was talking about that original radio and its silly code, it made me remember something....

That radio stinks!

I mean, you could buy the crappiest no-name stereo head unit today, and it would rock the pants off of that OEM dinosaur. I remember having the code thing happen to me right after I bought my Vanagon, and I called the guy who sold it to me, and asked him what the deal was. He said he could get me the code, but seriously, to just get a new stereo.

I bought an Alpine with cassette (this was around 1995 I guess) and installed an additional Alpine 30 watt amp under the drivers seat to power the 6 x 9's that I cut into the rear bench board. The Alpine delivered, I believe 8 watts at the head...

Today, the plain vanilla stereo heads deliver 30 watts, and there are units with 50 watts for a decent price.

I have a 40 watt Kenwood in there now, with CD (funny, as this head unit has more power than my Alpine amp under the seat!!) and I must say that I am completely satisfied with the setup.

Unless you only want your sound system in the Vanagon so that you can listen to Rush Limbaugh... do yourself a favor and upgrade!! That OEM radio is 15 years old! (it probably eats tapes too)

Anyway... good luck with your radio quest.

IMPORTANT!!! In order to reply to me, you must have the word "FISH" somewhere in the subject line of the email. Otherwise it goes directly in the trash.
