I would not use 20-50! You will see really high oil pressure and it won't flow as fast as it should. Talk to Boston Bob. He says 10-30 only! Jay --------------------------------------- Bob Could be right; Lets See 1st oil, 20 minutes at high friction, high heat. 2nd oil, 200 miles at high friction and possibly high temperatures 3 rd oil, 600-800 miles at city traffic and slow driving. Ok you do it Bob's way, I'll stick to my way. It all comes down to 'How long are you willing to give your engine for break-in?'. My engine has 12K on it and I ran it on 20/50 Penzoil for 8K then changed to Mobil 1 15/50. I gave this engine many hours of running at 3000 rpms before I turned it 4000 rpms at highway speeds. I'm really glad that I was running 20/50 oil. I somehow (stupid slippery fingers) inverted the oil bypass plunger when I installed it for the third time on my Type IV air cooled. I had lots of oil pressure, right up there at 80 psi at full temps and highway speeds (the gage pegged out at 80). The problem was the temps were up there around 260/270 and I ran 500 highway miles with it that way. En route I adjusted the valves, set the timing and did everything I could think of the get the temp down, even slowed the Westy down to 45 mph on the highway trying to get the temps down. I found and fixed the problem after I got home (put the bypass plunger in correctly) and the oil pressure is now as 60 psi at full temps and highway speeds with 3400 rpms. Its about 22 psi at full temps, 900 rpms at idle. Now the Mystery is; Would my engine have self destructed with the 10/30 or not? This is a judgement call and I made my decision.
