Get a Boston Bob engine and ask for the Euro chip Digijet ECU upgrade. Zoom-Zoom. I have one of his 1.9s. Easiest replacement and an upgrade in hp. If you can afford it, go for a 2.1 upgrade. I would still get the Euro ECU! I am sorry I wasted a year or more tinkering around with the old engine. Go for it. See:

Hi All,

I drive an '85 camper. It continues to run amazingly well although it has a weak cylinder. A mechanic here suggests that I replace the motor sooner because the added stress of running a weakened engine may damage the core which will lead to losing the core refund of about $600 when I do get around to replacing it. He would do a straight rebuild for ~$2,500. But, a friend of mine suggests that I just drive it until it no longer runs acceptably.

There seem to be alot of options for replacing -- from a straight rebuild to a subaru or golf swap. Any opinions on the pro's and con's of the various solutions would be appreciated. Cost is a consideration, but would be interested in paying appropriately more for increases in both value and performance.

Much appreciated, Ivan
