Subject: 87 Westy - Unknown Steering Boots
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed

Hey all, I've got a frustrating problem with I hope a simple solution.

I have an '87 Vanagon GL Westy (with power steering) and the listed replacement steering rack boots don't match the cracked boots I'm trying to replace. My current boots have a smaller diameter opening on the end which is attached to the steering tie rod. All replacement boots that I've been told should fit my model Vanagon, have a larger diameter opening which is intended to fit over a doughnut like ring on the tie rod. (This is diagramed in ETKA model:VA, 87, MG:4, SG:19, Illustration:53-00, for those who have access.)

I have two theories: either my tie rods once had these doughnuts and they broke off (were they nylon/plastic?), or I don't have the same power steering rack as my Van "should" or used-to have.

Either way, somewhere there ARE boots that fit directly over the tie rods with my steering rack, and I have not been able to find them. This would be far cheaper than replacing the tie rods. I would greatly appreciate ANY pointers!!

Thanks, Timothy Randle Seattle, WA "Petey" the 87 Westy
