My '76 had no supplemental heat. One cold winter day a bunch of us went off to lunch and someone yelled from the back, "when's it gonna get warm back here?" I replied, "April!"

RVC (required Vanagon content): my '81 has a built-in BA-6 gas heater that keeps me toasty, although after 19 trouble-free years, I've had to replace the combustion blower motor twice in 12 months; the points on the end start to fail.
