The van can now start up ok, rather quick for the cold weather, but then it

Before you open the engine up, be certain that your spark plug wires were on
the correct cylinders. If the passenger side, for example, were switched,
you would get an engine that would run fine at start, but would kick and
buck, and feel like it was going to break off the engine mounts on
acceleration.
