       Marla, at the rear of the transmission on the right side or passenger 
side there is a place where a dip stick tube could be installed for when this 
transmission is used in other vehicles.  The hole where the dip stick tube 
can be fitted is covered with a metal plug which very often rusts and 
therefore transmission oil will leak out.  If this is the case then you can 
plug that hole with a rubber or plastic plug of similar size and RTV silicone 
sealant.  Just make sure that the area is cleaned very well with something 
like lacquer thinner so the silicone will get a good bond.  Hope this is your 
problem and you get on with enjoying your Vanagon.
