The smell is just the waxy anti-corrosion protective coating burning off the new brake rotors. The rotors are coated so they don't rust in storage, and look nice and shiny when you buy them. That's why it's always a good idea to clean the braking surfaces of the rotors before installing them. Also in the future, if you think you don't get enough braking power and your brakes tend to fade, switch to semi-metallic VW Oem pads.
