Zoltan, you asked,

<< Let me ask a common question that would probably interest many on the List. What were the reaction of the authorities when they learned that the engine is not diesel anymore, and did you have to do anything to make it official? >>

Here's my story. I swopped from a Waterboxer to Tiico, and recently went through a smog check in the city of Atlanta Georgia. The technician didn't ask and I didn't tell.

He stuck an exhaust gas analyzer into the tail pipe, and read the engine RPMs using a sensor placed on top of the engine cover. He never even looked inside, and even if he had, most likely wouldn't have noticed anything different, since the only applicable engine information in the Vanagon specification in his record is that the motor is a 2.1liter 4cylinder, and, as everyone knows, a four is a four is a four. <EG>

Unfortunately, the test changed from last year, so I can't make a direct comparison between the two engines, but it appears as if the new one is slightly dirtier than the WBX, although well within specification.
