I slide the axle vertically into my vice and have the joint resting on top of the vice. You dont tighten up the vice, its just used to support the joint while the axle hangs down freely. The I hit the center of the axle (not the joint) with a hammer and using a socket of about the same diameter or smaller than the axle. Hammer and gravity pervail and the axle slides out. Although I dont recall mine being as tough as yours.
