Scott, give this method a try. It is how I remove CV's from the shaft.

Get an oak or otherwise hardwood dowel, or, you can use a brass dowel of 1/2" diameter.

1) Be sure the circlip is removed. 2) Stand the axle on it's end, CV joint end down, against a 2"X4" block of wood solidly braced by a concrete floor. 3) Place the dowel against the axle shaft parallel to it, one end on the inner race. In this position you can hold the shaft and the dowel in place with just one hand. 4) Strike the upper end of the dowel with about a 3 pound hammer only once. 5) Move the dowel around the shaft to another position about 1/4 around. 6) Strike the dowel head again - just once. 7) Continue to strike and rotate, strike and rotate, 8) Continue the process until the inner race drops off.

1)To Re-install the CV, get yourself a socket whose outer diameter fits just inside the outer diameter of the inner race. It should also be sufficiently large to pass over the splines with out damaging them. 2)Tap that socket until the race is down flush with the end of the shaft. 5) If necessary, use the dowel or "Drift" as it is called sometimes, to get the race down where it belongs.

That should do it.

Don't forget to put your new axle boots on the shaft before installing the new CV'S.

Luck,
