I just went through this on my 82 aircooled. You didnt mention what
year you are working on. I determined there are 2 ways to get the bolt
out. I used method 1:
1. remove the front section of the cooling tin to gain access to the
bolt from the back side. Actually all i did was bend the front cooling
tin enough to get a wrench betwen the tin and the engine/trans. The
idea is to gain access to the bolt from inside the engine bay, through
the bent piece of cooling tin, through the backside of the slave
bracket, and onto the bolt.
2. (i did not do this, but thought of it during the several hours i
spent looking at the situtation). saw off a wrench, making it short
enough to slip into the slave bracket from the back side. i think if
you could do this, you would not have to hold onto the wrench, as it
would be jammed up against the slave mount as you loosened the nut on
the top.
make sure you apply anit-seeze to the bolts before reassemble to keep
this from happening the next time.
good luck. at one point, i thought this was an impossible situation,
but i was able to do it.
