I do something similar, but far more rednecky when serious weather threatens (blizzard, ice storm, hellfire and tarnation, etc.)

We put the StormShield(tm) Vanagon cover on the Westfalia, and pop the top. With a little re-positioning, and some guy-bungies, the van cover works perfectly like this rain fly, but covers the front cargo bucket as well.
