In regards to the expansion tank for your Volkswagen Vanagon you recently purchased from us on ebay: When a company makes a mold to manufacture parts for the automotive industry, they grind marks in the mold so those marks will show on the surface of the finished product to identify the mold from which the particular part was made. The markings they use to identify the mold are sometimes (and sometimes not) the part number under which the part is going to be sold by the parent automobile company (in this case Volkswagen of America). As time passes and the vehicle manufacturer (Volkswagen) makes changes to their part numbering system, the parts manufacturers do not go to the great expense of remaking all of their molds just to reflect changes Volkswagen has made in their numbering system. These changes made in a numbering system are known in the industry as “supersessions.”

The current and only part number for the expansion tank on your Vanagon was superseded years ago in the Volkswagen Part Numbering System to: 025 121 403 B. Nothing has changed in the physical shape or functionality of the tank, it is the same tank that was on the first Vanagon that rolled off the assembly line for model year 1986. It fits 1986 through 1991 Vanagons and 1986 through 1991 Vanagon Syncro’s. All they changed is the number they decided to sell it under.

Volkswagen has more than one supplier for most of their parts. We have no way of knowing which manufacturer makes a particular part on our shelves nor what kind of identifying marks they may have ground in their mold. Therefore, the only way we sell, describe and ship parts are by their current number in the Volkswagen Part Numbering System. This number can be and usually is totally unrelated to any mold or casting marks that may be have placed on the mold or stamping die when the mold or die was made.

What is important; we advertised a 025 121 403 B expansion tank for a 1986 through 1991 Volkswagen Vanagon and that is what you received. Even more important from your viewpoint, regardless of what the markings made by the mold on the tank may have been, it was the correct part for your vehicle, it fit and did the job for which it was intended.

We appreciate your business.

JoAnn
