Subject:      how long is too long at mechanic

A friend of mine had taken his 85 Gl to a mechanic to work on the
transmission and cooling system last March. The mechanic never calls him to
let him no what's going on and he has paid for the work well over a thousand
dollars I think. How long can they keep a Vanagon or any car?
