Ryan Miller has an old awning that sounds like a Westy tent (Porta-room, Add-a-room) which no longer has the white rubber "gutter strip"...

Well folks, I have sort of the opposite problem/opportunity. I have a Westy tent to go with my family's '97 Eurovan camper (aka EVC). These vehicles have no rain gutters! The aftermarket EVC/MV vendors offer an add-on strip intended to hold the tent and other things that need a grip. I was thinking of adding a strip of magnets or tape-like magnet material over the tent and the Camper's steel body. Over all that is the last thing that's on my to-do list between now and Spring. =)

MY POINT IS: Given that the OEM rubber edge is removed from tent... I suggest Ryan obtain a length of 3/4" dia. sch40 PVC piping long enough to span the width of the tent. CAREFULLY cut a length-wise slot (cross-section like a very tight C ) in one side of the pipe. Table saw works well if blade is adjusted very low. *SAFETY FIRST!* Use a flat file to round off the edges of the pipe. Sew a length of medium size rope into a hem along the edge of the tent that formerly held the white rubber gutter grip. Slide the PVC pipe along the tent edge (or vice-versa) so that the pipe is over/around the cloth. Roll the pipe-with cloth in it around the Vanagon's gutter. Pressure of the pipe against the gutter should hold the tent gusset onto the Vanagon.
