This looks like the Cabrio setup that uses the K-wire and not the CAN-bus
system.

Maybe Bernd Jaeger has a set up.

He says he can "unlock" the engine and sell you a key and transponder set
for 200 $. For any TDI from 96 to 2001.
I think he is on holiday at the moment, but you can try.
Let me know how it goes since I want to do the same thing.
