It's a lot easier to swap an automatic for a manual than the other way around. Trust me, I've done both. If you are going to do the swap, make sure you have a automatic parts car handy, it will help greatly with all the little odds and ends you're going to need. As for gear ratios... All 090 Vanagon automatics are created equal with the exception of those with the ID character of "NJ" which have a final drive of 3.74 as opposed to 4.09 for all the other automatics. The gear ratios for all the automatics are the same. 2.1 liter Vanagon automatics had either "NJ" or "NK" trannies.
