Wasserboxer, best engine ever built? Well maybe not quite, but it's not the worst either. I used to drive a '81 a/c vanagon, and I liked it for the 7 years and 200,000 miles that I had it. My '90 westy with the 2.1 wasserboxer replaced it about 8 years ago. The 2.1 liter engine just kind of grew on me during those last 8 years. It's been reliable, and has taken me wherever I pointed it, the same as my former air cooled vanagon did. Air cooled or water cooled boxer engine doesn't make that much difference. If you can handle one, you can handle the other. It just takes a little time to learn the idiosyncracies of each type. However, none of them are necessarily inexpensive to keep running. If you're willing to learn about either of them, they will serve you faithfully. Harald '90 westy
