Fred is right. All Vanagons are getting a little long in the tooth. I drove a brand new '86 GL for 140K miles. It was our everyday people mover. (I sold it to buy my Westfalia a few years back.) It was still running strong, as it had been maintained from day one. Only real problems were the PS rack and a failed fuel pressure regulator. It went up and down Mt. Washington in NH the summer before I sold it and the buyer sucessfully drove it to Washington State. The Westy, on the other hand, was not maintained--at least the last few years. It still had over 124K on the original motor and the odometer was busted when I bought it. I coaxed another 7 or 8K out of it and finally sprung for a new Boston Bob 1.9l. I expect this one to last even longer than the first. I also have a lot of respect for Hondas and Toyotas, but they are as common as arm pits. That said, if I still needed a people mover, it wouldn't be a Vanagon. The Westy is still around because it is just that--a camper.

Jay
