Adding relays, yes two are needed, is a very good plan whether or not you use higher wattage bulbs. The voltage at the headlamp is being restricted by the main and dimmer switches. See my Vanagon Headlamp Relay Upgrade webpage for more information and a kit I have for sale that anyone can simply install. I just received a supply of genuine Hella 100/80 watt 9004 halogen headlamp bulbs for sale separately or along with my relay kit. The price is $14.95 CAD/ bulb. They are not on the website yet but will be by the end of today. I also have 100 watt GE halogen bulbs for the inner driving lights, see the website. The relays are necessary to use these bulbs. The OEM wiring and bulb sockets will work just fine. I've had this set-up running on my '87 Westy since the beginning of October and it's just fine. Not perfect mind you but just much brighter lights without breaking the bank from the crappy OEM lenses.
