Ken, The TDI does still have a timing belt, which drives the fuel pump, camshaft, and water pump. The fuel pump is really an injection pump, so that is why it is so expensive. I believe a 2001 with an automatic should have it's timing belt replaced at 40k. But if it broke, it wouldn't run at all. The warranty changed from 2001 to 2002, so I am not sure what the 2001 covers. ( I have a 2002 Golf TDI.) That does sound fishy though, the dealer may be trying to yank him around. There is a pretty good TDI list on yahoo. Also check tdiclub.com, the definitive source for TDI info. Those symptoms sound like possibly a dying MAF sensor, which is a known issue. I don't think I have ever read of a late model injection pump dying on the yahoo list. The injection pump may be covered by the emissions warranty also. Hope that helps.

FYI, the oil that the dealer will use on these cars is not really up to the service it will get in the TDI engine. Especially at the recommended 10k mile drain interval. Most people recommend Mobil Delvac 1, which is specifically designed for EGR equipped diesel service. What the dealer uses is castrol syntec, a synthetic blend that meets a VW 505 standard, but is really not rated as a diesel service oil. Folks running Delvac, a full synthetic, run it 10k miles and even at that time oil analysis shows it is still in good serviceable condition.
