I replaced my hose from the oil breather to the intake boot with a 3/4"
electrical conduit. It has a short piece of hose as a connector on each
end with clamps. It has lasted eight years with just 4" of hose replaced
every couple of years.
The only oil that passes is minute but it can have considerable vacuum on
it that can collapse on old soft hose.
It creates a vacuum leak of it cracks or leaks.
If you're new to your van I'd replace very FI hose with known quality FI
hose and every other hose in the engine bay.
The Fuel Injection hose is the most important to keep an eye on. Engine
fires kill many VWs of all types.
---------------------------------
Here is what I found out.
1) The Pep Boys hose allows me to tighten the OEM VW hose clamps
completely down to full stop travel.
2) The Goodyear hose is of a harder *durometer* rubber and the clamps can
still be tightened another four or five turns before they reach full
stop.
3) Both are the same size hose and both have the same spec number on
them.
4) Subtle difference in the hardness of the material they are
manufactured from.
I'm glad I spent the money and got the Goodyear hose ............... I'll
just feel better.
I know that all of Pep Boys store brand engine cleaners, alternate to
LPS, alternate to WD40, alternate to Berryman B12 carb cleaner are pretty
crummy products.
-------------------------------------
I found one more little thing different in the FI hose.
With the Pep Boys stuff I was cutting it with my Proto diagonal cutters.
I had to use a razor blade to cut the Goodyear material.
When you pick up the bubble pack and it says Made In China ..............
just draw your own conclusions about quality.
