More on the idle stabiliser control unit. Yesterday, I opened up the one currently on my '87 Westy. It's still the original that I became suspect of. I see no evidence of the power transistor being burnt as I saw in the one from the '86 Transporter. The lettering on the transistor is clearly legible, BD 438. I do see that what may be a resister, long grey coloured device all the way at the end of the board in the same line as the power transistor, looks to be discoloured right sorta dead centre. This is evident on both the units I have here. Not sure how this item can be checked. Anyways the mystery goes on. My buddy Hans sent me a pic of one he has that he opened up and there are two power transistors, one after the other, on the RH edge of the card when your looking down at it with the pins facing forward. So what's that all about ? Numbers on the box are: 412.202/015/007 251 907 393D the one from the '86 Syncro with the evidently burned power transistor has these markings: 412.202/015/004 251 907 393B. I'm supposing the one Hans has is from a later model. The two I have seem to be the same. Mysteries of the Vanagon to be continued................
