The previous owner of my Westy used the fridge all the time (12 years) without service, I've used it 8 years without service. I think they just work until they don't work. If you get a lot of water down the vent it might shorten the life but they seem to work very good for many years. I've noticed that my vent fan is noisy and I think that is common to most.
