Hi Jay, I should point out to you and others in the USA that a T4 Syncro has been available in the European market for some years now. So yes, you were correct to say that the rear suspension of the T4 (USA: Eurovan) was designed with AWD in mind. I am considering a used Eurovan Syncro as a replacement for my Vanagon.
