Upright 1600cc Beetle engine in a vanagon isn't such a crazy idea. The first vanagons sold in Europe did come with a modified 1600cc Beetle engine. Technical specs of the original 1600cc vanagon engine: 50 hp, torque 103 nm at 2400 rpm. Displacement, 1,584 cubic cm, Compression 7.4:1, Octane ROZ 91. They had hydraulic lifters, factory oil filter, and a single Solex 34 Pict-4 carb with 4 intake manifold runners. The cooling system consisted of a pancake engine type fan, with a blower attached to the crankshaft, similar to the type 4 but smaller. The engine was mounted with a motor mount, which supported the engine under the rear. Oil cooler similar as type 4. The whole thing basically looked similar to a baby type 4 engine. The direct replacement for this motor a few years later was the much touted 1600 diesel engine, which had superior fuel efficiency and torque, compared to the 1600 air cooled. Now you know it.
