Subject: Erratic Cold Idle
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

I'm trouble-shooting an erratic idle problem with a cold engine. The archives and Bentley trail have led to the Aux Air Flow Valve. I got the old valve out last night (a tough job!). Two questions:

1. Is there a bench test for this component? I'm not certain the old one is bad. 2. Has anyone had success cleaning and re-installing this part vs. a complete replacement?. My local VW dealer can get it but takes a week.

If the aux valve proves not be the culprit, I'm next going to the AFM. I did the Bentley checks on this last night also. With a meter on the contacts, I moved the air gate. The needle movement on my meter was less than linearly proportional. (the resitance would hold steady, then jump with steady movment of the gate) The potentiometer surface may be worn. Any luck adjusting the wiper to a new sector on the pot?

Thanks,
