The normal procedure is to put a thermostat in the oil line to the cooler. It is always partially open to measure the temperature but opens fully as the temperature reaches the specified range. Many GM cars have little thermostatically controlled fans, unlike to VW the sensor is just clipped to the steel fan support frame. (VW is in the radiator with the temp sender). I don't know the range of these thermostats but a hair dryer and a thermometer will be enough to test them if you can't find the individual specifications. My Mazda RX7 oil cooler is simply mounted in the air flow under the van and I've never had an overheating problem since I installed it (it has a 148 degree thermostat). Before I went out and added fans and fan controllers I'd test the cooler as is but with the oil flow regulation thermostat (Bus Depot has them). If you are running an Air Conditioner you can hook your fan motor power to the same fan controller that turns on your A/C fan. The same goes for controlling the fan if you have a Waser Boxer, hook it to the radiator fan controller. Electrical limitations are in effect so a relay may be necessary.
