Mark,

Yes, you can replace one piston and cylinder, just make sure the new/used piston is the same manufacturer and weight group (indicated by a "+" or "-" on the piston) as the other three. I've done this plenty of times in the past with no problems.

If you go this route, let me know if you need a piston & cylinder, I have three good ones sitting on the shelf.

Cheers,

Jeff

I need some 2.1 pistons and cylinders, or at least some advice.

I have an '87 Vanagon GL which has (had) a broken exhaust valve. Not knowing this for quite some time, I drove and drove and drove the thing, until it suddenly developed a rather impressive smokescreen. I pulled my heads off, and found the offending valve and a nicely washed out cylinder. The other cylinders appear to be pretty healthy, and the heads and valve seats look good too.

My questions are these: Can I replace the single piston and cylinder? I did this (against professional advice) years ago in my clapped out 1800 motor with no trouble.

Are used 2.1 cylinder sets availiable? Useable?

I'm really just trying to save buck here... I've got a custom surfboard that will be ready very soon, and I don't want to delay the delivery of that by even one second.

Thanks,

Mark Vermillion
