I've seen several overhead storage cabinets installed. There are lots of steel members behind your headliner to but angle brackets. The storage bin itself doesn't need to be very heavy, 1/4" plywood at the most. I keep a couple of pillows in mine so I don't have any problem with overloading it. I suppose it could hold some weight but I think it would tend to rattle with sidewise movement of contents.
