Hi,

I am new to this list - so hello everybody...

I bought an '84 Vanagon (UK Transporter) 1588 diesel in september, with (supposedly) 99k and a UK MOT, and I was wanting to get some suggestions on what I should check out/replace in order to ensure I have a sound vehicle and don't get expensive repairs in the future!

So far I have done: -water pipes (changed the rotting metal ones for the plastic ones) -heater matrix -new fuel tank (in place of rotting one) -engine oil flush & change -brakes (checked - seem ok) -cam belt (with help of a a mechanic friend), timing etc

I am defintately an amateur mechanic, so please be gentle. I was thinking maybe changing the oil in the gearbox/differential, possibly for the first time in its life? One issue it has is that the limited slip diff, in my opinion at least, grinds too much on corners and especially when the transmission has warmed-up - and I believe it is getting worse as well. I find myself avoiding any kind of acceleration around corners, or even cornering with the clutch pushed in - it makes me wince otherwise!! I also have a leaky crank shaft oil seal (at the 'cam belt end' of the engine). I am putting this repair off, as I think it is too hard to do myself, and its going to cost I am sure. Also, how do I know if the oil seals are leaking at the other end?/is it important?

I live in South Bucks, England, so to any one local I would be interested in exchanging parts/advice etc.

regards - and seasons greetings!

David Milward.
