Hi Brad,

I think the rods and end caps are balanced as a unit. You may find drilled holes in the big end that are from removing material to balance them. Usually one match-marks the rods and caps with scratches or numbers so they go back together in the same sets. Only really anal people would balance the pistons too, I think that's more like "bluprinting".

With the deisel motor, I think you have to measure the piston projection on new pistons and use the corrresponding head gasket.
