David, have you tried any modifications to make this work?

I visited a local Audi hot rod shop a few months ago to see if my South African 5-cyl. bell housing would fit any of their turbo gas motors. I noted that the flywheel position sensors on the block of the MC and later turbo engines do not allow the bellhousing to bolt to the engine block. Also, the flywheel that may come with a conversion kit may or may not be compatible with the position sensors. However, one of the owners of the shop pointed out to me that you could just cut or grind out a small section of the block mating face on the bellhousing to clear the sensors. Then, use the flywheel that comes with the MC engine to ensure the flywheel is compatible with the position sensors. I have not tried this, so do not know if it would really work. Has anyone else tried?
